Update! It turns out I was wrong about Chip Zdarsky's Devil's Reign. It turns out Tony felt out of character because it wasn't the real Tony:
My bad. But I sure hope the real Tony is okay. I'd hate to find out Doc Ock has imprisoned him and is forcing him to kiss his tentacles again. (Oh, who am I kidding? I'd actually love that. Sorry.)

It's amazing, really: with his friends, Tony is a never-ending fount of kindly advice. And yet - and yet - he struggles to apply his wisdom to himself. Everyone else: fantastic people who shouldn't feel guilty for things they can't really control. Tony Stark: absolute asshole who's responsible for everything that goes wrong. (The above page, by the way, is from Captain America #279.)

Tony appears in Bernie's crazy dream from Captain America #289. Back in the 1980's, Assistant Editor's Month was pretty fun! (Some day, I'll show you captures from the Iron Man comic from the same month. The A-story in that issue features little kids pretending to be the Avengers, and it's super cute. <3)

My FB memories just reminded me that this is a comic that exists. So here's my mini-thread on... the time Tony is forced to strip bare-ass naked for a fight! pic.twitter.com/r9Zk2HwHvC

If you would like to read a comic in which Tony Stark voluntarily puts himself in the way of Thor's hammer...
... reveals, once again, that he's amazing with children...
... and spends basically the entire comic muscling through severe anxiety in re: magical bugs crawling inside of his armor, then I recommend The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers.
