In Tales of Suspense #66, Stan plays with irony again. We know that Tony is a lonely hero struggling with both a disability and his unrequited love. But in the Marvel world, Tony has a reputation that drags him down like an anchor. The public image/private pain contrast is, for me, incredibly interesting.
Tony saves the world from one of Attuma's schemes -- but to preserve his secret identity, he must pretend his new sub design failed, thereby encouraging Senator Byrd's contempt. And meanwhile, Happy has decided he's tired of being Tony's second fiddle and has stormed off. Ack! The acting in that last panel says it all: there's no rest for our poor, put-upon protagonist.
