So here's another thing modern writers don't understand: Tony's party-boy persona is such a defense mechanism -- not a reflection of his true character. In reality, he's desperate for real intimacy -- but he denies himself that essential element of human flourishing because he believes (wrongly) that anyone who gets close to him will only get hurt.
